CULTURE: Jalisco / Ameca Variant ORIGIN: West Mexico AGE: Ca. 100 B.C. - 250 A. D. DESCRIPTION: An intact seated Jalisco figure measuring 11" in height. He is covered with a tan/ochre slip and painted with black highlights. His body shape is that of a compact male figure and he has short forward pointing outstretched arms. He most possibly is a depiction of a dwarf wrestler. He is clad in a tight fitting cap and a short cropped garment encircling his waist and upper legs. His eyes are large and almond shaped. Many mineral formations are scattered throughout the surface attesting to his great antiquity. There are many Jalisco figures of the period representing more common themes but this effigy is highly unusual and rarely seen. PROVENANCE: The Bill Freeman Estate Collection, Scottsdale, AZ. Acquired 1960's. - 1980's
