Mudcloth fabric is created by sewing 6 inch strips of cloth together of different pattern to give the fabric it's one of a kind look.
One panel has a dye imperfection on one edge.
The men of the village weave the cloth strips.  The designs are applied by hand by the women.
The whole process takes months for one item.
Fabric strips can be assembled in a variety of patterns.
Mudcloth or bògòlanfini is fabric typically made from fermented mud. This cloth originates from Mali’s Bamana culture. In their culture the fabric is  typically worn as a form of camouflage for hunters and as a badge of status for ritual protection. Women also have special cultural traditions and are wrapped in fabric after their initiation into adulthood and following childbirth. Traditionally, the cloth is believed to take away any dangerous or evil forces caused by the circumstances. Bògòlanfini patterns have historic and cultural significance. They were worn during the famous battle between a Malian soldier and the French and are significant to Bambara mythology.   Bògòlanfini has been their heritage and cultural identity for over 40 years.
