"Florencia Espinal Ramírez lives in Texalpa-Olinalá, Guerrero with her husband and two sons, ages 16 and 18. She learned to make lacquerware from her husband’s family who has been making it for over 50 years. All four members of her family collaborate to make the beautiful laca that their town is famous for.
The art of working with laca was originally brought to Guerrero from the Orient in the 1600 and 1700s via the Manilla clipper ships. Most people living in Olinalá work in lacquer and produce lacquerware similar to the finest examples produced in China and their work is exported all over the world.
Wood is the base of the lacquerware that Florencia and her family produce. They begin by sanding the wood and then sealing it with a varnish made from natural oils and earthen pigments such as ground dirt and rocks found near Olinalá. After drying, a stone is used to burnish the surface until it is smooth. More powdered pigments are mixed with oil and multiple layers are applied until the desired tone and shine is achieved. After drying for up to a month, the piece is ready for decoration. Using homemade brushes made from turkey feathers, the designs are sketched.
Florencia has participated in Concursos de Fonart for more than ten years and has earned 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards in various concursos over the years. She has also participated in the Fomento Cultural Banamex events and been rewarded for the excellent quality of her work."
