    Description

Exceptional Kuba (Shoowa) Kasai Velvet Raffia Cloth with Fringe, Framed
    Item Description and Condition Details.
Kasai velvet is a type of raffia cloth produced by the Shoowa group of the Kuba peoples of Zaire (D.R. Congo).  It is made by weaving palm tree leaf fronds (raffia) into a fabric, followed by embellishment with additional raffia threads which are pulled through the weaving and clipped creating the Kasai velvet in the listing. The designs are geometric with variations on the form throughout the design. The abrupt change in design of the piece of typical of the designs created by the Shoowa.
This is an exceptional example with raffia fringe intact, a bold asymmetric geometric design, and vibrant, saturated natural colors.  The artifact is in perfect, as-produced condition, and shows no obvious signs of decomposition, dirt, or grime.  It is nicely framed (shadowboxed) to keep it that way, and is ready to be put on display & enjoyed.  It is bold enough to serve as a focal point and certain to stoke discussion with those who view it.
