    History of these coins:
During the later period of the Roman empire Christianity began to replace paganism.  This change was reflected in their coinage.
Gone were the images of emperors replaced instead with images of Jesus Christ and religious inscriptions called "Christo grams".
The reverse side of the coin offered here carries Christo-gram IC-XC with NI-KA, (May Jesus Christ Conquer).  These coins represent
    significant change in the
world's religious direction and have become highly collectible.
The coin offered is classed as a "C" and has the following characteristics:
    Attributed to Michael IV (1034-1041).
Obv. Three-quarter length Christ Figure wearing nimbus cross, pallium and colobium, and raising right hand in benediction; left hand holding Gospels; to left IC and XC to right in field.
    +ЄMAN NOVHΛ
    on right and left.
Rv. Cross made from pearls with large pellet at each extremity.
    Inscription in angles: IC-XC above
    transverse limbs of cross  and
    NI-KA below (
    May Jesus Christ Conquer
    ).
These coins are overstruck on Class A 2 and sometimes Class B.  The cross represents a type of icon to which Empress Zoe was particularly devoted, and a similar representation appears on a pattern histamenon of Zoe's brief sole reign in December 1041.  Sometimes called the Anniversary Follis.
On April 11, 1034, emperor Romanus III (1028-34) was assassinated by his wife Zoe, making it possible for her lover Michael IV to marry her and become king the very next day.  His first order was to make new coinage to be ready for the returning Pilgrims coming back through Constantinople after their 1033 pilgrimage to Jerusalem marking the 1000th anniversary of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Anonymous Folles minted under the reign of various emperors include:
    John I, 969 - 976 AD.
Basil II and Constantine VIII, circa 989 AD.
    Romanus III, 1028 - 1034 AD.
    Michael IV, 1034 - 1041 AD.
    Constantine IX, 1042 - 1055 AD.
    Constantine X, 1059 - 1067 AD.
    Romanus IV, 1068 - 1071 AD.
    Nicephorus III, 1078 - 1081 AD.
