History of these coins:
During the later period of the Roman empire Christianity began to replace paganism. This change was reflected in their coinage. Gone were the images of emperors replaced instead with images of Jesus Christ and religious inscriptions called "Christo grams". The reverse side of the coin offered here carries a typical Christo gram:
ISXS / bASILE / bASIL
"Jesus Christ, King of Kings". These coins represent significant change in the world's religious direction and have become highly collectible.
The coin offered is classed as an "D" and has the following characteristics:
Attributed to Constantine IX (1042-1055).
Obv. Christ seated on throne with back facing, wearing nimbus cross, pallium and colobium, and holding book of Gospels in both hands. In field IC to left, XC to right.
Rv. Inscription in 3 lines: ISXS / bASILE / bASIL. Above legend is small cross − + −; below is cresent −
ں
−.
These coins were overstruck on class C and sometimes class B and Class A 2.
