Louis (Lugwig) I
was the king of Hungary, Croatia and Poland from 1342-1382 A.D.
He has been regarded by Hungarian historians as the most powerful Hungarian monarch whose empire’s “shores were washed by 3 seas” (Black, Adriatic and Baltic) He is the only Hungarian monarch to receive the epithet “Great”.
PATRIARCHAL CROSS
The Patriarchal Cross was similar to the Latin cross, but has a smaller crossbar placed above the main one so that both crossbars are near the top.
It was used in large numbers in the 10
th
century during the Byzantine Empire.
This two-barred cross has been one of the main elements of the Hungarian coats of arms since the 12
th
century.
