These quirky, fun versions of cards from the Mexican Loteria game are made of hand-punched and painted tin. Each measures approx 4" tall x 2.75" wide. They include card #37 - El Mundo (the world), card #2 - El Diablito (the little devil) and card #14 - El Muerte (Death). Each has a small hole for hanging. and it consists of a set of 54 cards.
The game
originated
in Italy in the 15th century and was brought to New Spain (modern Mexico) in 1769. In the beginning,
lotería
was a hobby of the upper classes, but eventually it became a tradition at Mexican fairs. Don Clemente Jacques began publishing the game in 1887.
