Description
This blanket woven by a Fulani man or men from Niger ( Djerma Hausa Fulani ) in West Africa during the 1950s or 1960s. The Fulani tribe arepastoral or nomadic shepherds. In the winter months, the Fulani cattle herders ( Wodaabe ) use these blankets for warmth and protect from mosquitoes.
These textiles are valued for their weight, warmth and intricate patterns. The strips are woven often using cotton on men's double heddle loom.
The woven strips or panels with vibrant colors and motifs are stiched together to produce this large wedding blanket or tent liner or wall hanging.
Each of this amazing and beautiful textile took several months to produce and would be very difficult to duplicate today, given the accelerated
decline of the artisan skills required for this type of work among the new generation of Fulani.
These one-of-a-kind handwoven treasure fit a variety of design aesthetics, while adding an heirloom like sense of glamour. This traditional African craft will appeal
to collectors, designers and decorators who have interest in African masterpieces. This blanket is bound to heighten the artistic perception of African textiles work.
