Description
Vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo fabric, made by the Dogon in Mali. Textiles are dyed with the resist, stitch dyeing technique and each piece is unique; others are woven in stripe patterns. This is an interesting work with each technique sewn together. All the ones I will be listing arehard to find, older indigo pieces in very good conditon, with the old dyed patterns, all were used and soft from wear and washing, and each has been washed and will not bleed.
This mostly medium weight piece has
10 cotton strips, 6 that have stitch dyed patterns of “eyes”, “v’s”, “x’s” and “dogan ladder” images. The other 4 strips have lighter blue stripes of various widths.
Work is approximately 58" x 44” and in very good-excellent condition with minor seam repair and/or seam opening, and a very few, hard to see tiny holes that sometimes occur when taking the dying stitching out; ends are not hemmed.
I was lucky to have first choice of many shipments of indigo as they arrived from Africa and I picked those with the most unique designs and in the best condition. I try to photograph many pictures of each and describe any problems or damage, but feel free to send questions you might have.
