Description

Beautiful vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo fabric, made by the Dogon in Mali. Textiles are dyed with the stitch resist dying techniques and each piece is unique. All the ones I will be listing are
hard to find, older indigo pieces in very good conditon, and all were used and soft from wear and washing, and colorfast. This piece has a wonderful stitch dyed linear “ladder”, “butterfly” pattern, with metallic thread running down the length.
Lighter weight; 44" x 59”; 5 strips sewn together; twisted fringe on one end with some coming loose, and unfinished on the other end. Very good-excellent condition: due to the thiness of the weave, there are some areas, especially at one corner where it would have more wear, pulling and/or tucking into the waist if worn as a wrapper, of linear separation of the weaving; one tiny, hard to see hole. These metallic thread pieces are very nice, and very popular, as is the “ladder” design.
I was lucky over the past years to have “first choice” of many large containers of indigos, as they arrived directly from Africa, and will continue selling this collection, including striped indigos as well as patterned ones. I picked ones that were in the best condition, and/or the most unique, but there are almost always a few flaws, which I will note in my listings and photographs.
