Description
Wonderful, vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo fabric, made by the Dogon in Mali. Textiles are dyed with the resist, stitch dyeing technique and each piece is unique. All the ones I will be listing arehard to find, older indigo pieces in very good conditon, with the old dyed patterns, and all were used and soft from wear and washing.
This piece has 10 medium weight hand woven cotton panels, hand-stitched together; approximately 39" x 60”. Solid blue panels alternate with ones showing wavy stitch dyed wide white vertical lines. There is a nice, colorful embroidered end, which probably shows that textile was used in a wedding. Work has been washed, is clean, and will not bleed. Excellent condition: end opposite embroidery is hemmed; no major problems or holes that I can see.
I have been lucky enough have first choice of indigos from several large containers of textiles as they arrived directly from Africa. I hand picked those that are in the best condition and those with the most unique and beautiful patterns. All may have some minor problems or damage, but I try to describe and/or photograph any problems for buyers.
